WhatsApp already has formatting — use it first

Inside a chat, WhatsApp formats text for you: wrap a word in asterisks for bold, underscores for italic, tildes for strikethrough, and three backticks for monospace. That formatting is the right tool for messages. It renders consistently, it stays searchable, and it does not confuse screen readers.

Unicode styling is for everything WhatsApp will not format: your About text, group subjects, your profile name, and status text. Those fields take the characters exactly as pasted.

  • *bold* _italic_ ~strikethrough~ and ```monospace``` work in chats
  • About text, profile name and group subjects need Unicode styling
  • Group subjects are short — favour compact styles

Keep names readable for the people who message you

WhatsApp is a contacts app. People find each other by name, and search matches the characters literally, so a fully styled profile name can make you harder to find in a long chat list. A light touch — small caps, or a single symbol — keeps the name recognisable while still looking different from the default.

Group subjects behave the same way. One styled word plus plain text usually beats styling the whole subject line.

What breaks, and how to check

WhatsApp runs on a very wide range of devices, including older Android phones with limited font coverage. Those devices are the ones that show empty boxes for the more unusual characters. Bold, italic, small caps and combining strikethrough or underline are the safest picks.

The reliable test is to send the styled text to yourself in a chat and look at it on the phone you care about, before putting it in a group of two hundred people.

What people use it for

WhatsApp Font Generator: questions and answers

How do I bold text in WhatsApp without a generator?

Put an asterisk on each side of the word: *like this*. WhatsApp converts it as you send. Underscores give italic, tildes give strikethrough, and three backticks give monospace.

Why use Unicode styling at all then?

Because chat formatting does not work in your About text, profile name or group subjects. Those fields display raw text, so the only way to style them is to use characters that are already styled.

Will my styled text show correctly on everyone’s phone?

Mostly. Newer iPhones and Android phones handle these characters well. Very old devices may show boxes for the more exotic families, so stick to bold, small caps and italic in large groups.

Does styled text break WhatsApp search?

Yes, in the sense that searching for the plain spelling will not match styled characters. Keep names and important keywords plain if you rely on finding them later.

Can I use these styles in WhatsApp Business?

You can, but be careful. Catalogue names, automated replies and anything a customer needs to read or search should stay plain. Save styling for a greeting line at most.
