What is a kaomoji?

A kaomoji is an expression made from text characters, often read upright rather than sideways. Parentheses suggest a face; punctuation and symbols supply eyes, a mouth, arms or ears. Unlike an emoji image, you can select and edit every character.

A simple (^_^) reads as a smile, (T_T) as tears, and (=^･ω･^=) as a cat. More elaborate faces combine characters from several scripts. Their spacing and shapes depend on the fonts available in the destination.

Copy a complete face

Choose a mood and use the Copy button beside a face. Paste it into your chat, caption or note. Copying the whole expression helps keep a backslash, combining mark or small space that can be easy to miss when selecting it by hand.

If a message editor treats underscores, asterisks or backslashes as formatting, check the saved message. A plain-text field or a simpler face may preserve the expression better. No login is needed and the search stays in your browser.

Pick a face that people can understand

Text faces communicate tone, but their meaning depends on context. Add ordinary words when the message is important. Assistive technology may read the punctuation aloud or skip part of a complex expression.
