Three different kinds of small

Small caps are capital shapes drawn at roughly lower-case height. They cover the whole alphabet, look deliberate rather than gimmicky, and are the most readable option by a wide margin. Superscript letters are much smaller and sit high on the line — the classic “tiny text” look. Subscript letters sit low, but Unicode never encoded most of them.

Superscript is missing a lower-case q, and subscript exists for only about half the alphabet. Anything without a counterpart is left as the original character so the word remains readable instead of showing a gap.

What tiny text is actually good for

Small text creates hierarchy. A normal-size first line with a tiny second line reads as a title and a subtitle, which is exactly the layered look people want in a bio. It is also useful for a quiet aside — a pronoun, a location, a credit — that should be present without competing for attention.

It is a bad choice for anything important. Superscript letters are physically small on a phone, and readers with low vision will simply skip them.

Why the text is not really resized

Nothing here changes the font size. These are separate characters that were designed small, mostly for use in phonetics and mathematics. That is why a “small” line can still occupy the same number of characters against a bio limit, and why the effect survives being pasted into a field with no formatting at all.
