Discord already formats messages: **bold**, *italic*, __underline__, ~~strikethrough~~ and backticks for code. Inside a message, that markdown is the better choice — it stays searchable, screen readers handle it correctly, and it renders identically for everyone.
Unicode styling earns its place in the fields markdown cannot reach: your server nickname, the server name, category and channel names, channel topics, role names and your global display name. Those fields render the characters literally, which is exactly what you want.
Discord ships its own interface font. When a character is missing from it, the app falls back to another font on your system, and the substitute may sit slightly higher or lower than the surrounding text. That is why a blackletter nickname can look a little off-baseline in the member list while looking perfect elsewhere.
Mathematical bold, italic, blackletter, monospace and small caps have the best coverage in practice. Enclosed and blocky glyphs are more likely to fall back.
Server search matches the characters as typed, so a member with a styled nickname is hard to find by plain spelling — worth remembering before you rename an entire staff team. Many servers also run auto-moderation that flags unusual characters or heavy zalgo, since stacked combining marks can break layout in the member list. If a server asks for readable names, that is why.
Not the unique username — Discord restricts it to lower-case letters, numbers, dots and underscores. Your display name and per-server nickname both accept styled Unicode, and those are what other members see.
Yes, but Discord markdown is usually better inside a message. Use Unicode when you want a look markdown cannot produce, such as small caps or blackletter.
Their device lacks a glyph for those characters. Older Windows installs and some Linux setups miss parts of the mathematical block. Switching to small caps or bold fixes it for everyone.
It renders, but many servers ban it in names because tall stacks of combining marks overlap neighbouring rows in the member list. Expect a moderator to ask you to change it.
Yes. Channel and category names accept Unicode, which is how servers get those decorated section headers. Note that Discord lower-cases text channel names and replaces spaces with dashes, so pick styles without spaces.
