A combining low line, not an underscore

The underline here is a combining low line placed after each character. It sits below the letter it follows and joins up with its neighbours, producing a continuous rule under the word. That is quite different from typing underscores between letters, which produces visible gaps and changes the text itself.

The same mechanism gives you a double underline, an overline above the text, and decorative variants such as a dot or a small wave under each character.

Underline carries a specific meaning online

On the web, underlined text means a link. Underlining something that is not clickable can be genuinely confusing, especially for people who navigate by scanning. In a bio or a post, bold usually communicates emphasis better and creates no false expectation.

Where underline does work well is in a plain-text document, a spreadsheet header, or a field where you want a visible rule and have no formatting tools.

Rendering caveats

Underline marks are drawn by the font, so the exact thickness and vertical position vary between devices, and lines occasionally break between characters where glyph widths differ. Text with descenders — g, j, p, q, y — can look crowded, because the rule passes through the descender. If precision matters, real formatting is better.
